We teach one student at a time, and we plan the whole run

Hash Scholars Academy exists because group tuition scales by adding students, which is exactly the thing that stops a fourteen-year-old asking the question they are embarrassed to ask. Everything else here follows from that one decision.

Why we started

Group tuition scales the wrong way

Add a student to a tutorial group and the economics improve while the teaching quietly degrades, because the one thing that cannot be shared is attention. The student who most needs to say I did not follow any of that is precisely the student who will not say it in front of five peers, and that silence compounds across a two-year syllabus until it becomes a grade.

Hash Scholars was built to remove the audience. Every session is one student and one tutor, and the awkward question gets asked in week two rather than in the exam hall.

  • One student per session, or a sibling pair on the same syllabus
  • A written plan the family can read, argue with and amend
  • Recordings and annotated whiteboards after every lesson
  • A progress report every six weeks, whether or not the news is good

How we teach

The method, in five moving parts

It is not complicated. It is simply done every week, which is the part most tutoring arrangements cannot sustain.

01

Diagnose before selling

The free trial ends with a marked piece of the student's own work and a written opinion. Families are welcome to take that and go elsewhere, and a reasonable number do.

02

Write the plan down

Topics, papers, checkpoint dates. On one page, shared with the family. A plan nobody can read is a plan nobody can hold us to.

03

Teach live, with the pen moving

Tutors work problems rather than present slides, and the student writes on the same board. Thinking time is protected, because a student who is never allowed to pause learns to guess.

04

Return the work marked

Annotated whiteboard, recording, three-line note and one task, sent the same evening. Marking against the real grid is where most of the teaching value sits.

05

Report every six weeks

A written report to the parent account, including where progress has stalled. We would rather send an uncomfortable report in November than a surprising result in August.

Read the method, then test it

The free trial is the whole method compressed into thirty minutes, which is the only honest way to demonstrate teaching.

Who teaches here

Tutors are hired for what they have marked

Subject knowledge is the entry requirement rather than the qualification. What we screen for is whether somebody can explain why a mark was refused.

🔍

How we recruit

Applicants teach a live sample lesson to a member of our academic team playing a student who is stuck and slightly defensive. Most strong subject specialists find this harder than they expect, and roughly one in nine applicants is offered a place.

📝

Examining experience

We prioritise tutors who have marked or examined the paper they teach, because knowing how a script is read is a different skill from knowing the subject. Where a tutor has not examined, they are trained on the mark schemes before taking students.

🔄

What happens after hiring

Sessions are observed in the first term, progress notes are audited, and tutors whose students stop improving are retrained or removed. Continuing to bill a family for teaching that is not working is the worst thing a tutoring company can do.

ObservationNote auditsRetraining
Safeguarding is not optional. Tutors working with under-18s hold current background checks appropriate to their jurisdiction, sessions are recorded by default, and no tutor contacts a student outside the platform.

What we commit to

Four promises, each of which you can hold us to

🕘

Your slot is your slot

The same tutor at the same time each week. Reschedule free with 12 hours notice, and we hold the slot rather than reselling it.

📄

Everything in writing

Plans, notes, reports and quotes. Nothing important is agreed only on a call.

🛑

We will tell you to stop

When a student no longer needs tutoring, the tutor says so. It costs us a booking and it is the reason families come back.

🔐

Recordings stay private

Shared with the registered parent account only, deleted twelve months after a course ends unless you ask otherwise.
